How to assess German fluency in recruitment
Design a fair, job-relevant language assessment for German-facing roles.
Updated: 21 October 2026
Map language to tasks
A customer-support role may require clear explanations and empathy, while an enterprise sales role may require negotiation and commercial writing. Define observable requirements.
Use consistent exercises
Where appropriate, ask candidates to complete the same realistic task: explain a product issue, summarise a customer email or conduct a discovery conversation.
Assess both languages separately
German customer communication and English internal collaboration are different requirements. Evaluate them against their actual use.
Document relevant evidence
Use a clear rubric covering comprehension, accuracy, tone and task completion. Avoid irrelevant questions or assumptions based on nationality.
Protect candidate data
Only collect information needed for recruitment, explain its use and retention, and apply the same standards consistently.
